New York, NY The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) will be honoring two exceptional New York organizations through named Awards of Merit, each with a $5,000 scholarship. The Award of Merit honorees for 2017 are the New York Building Congress and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (New York District).
The scholarships will be presented at the ACEC New York 50th Anniversary Engineering Excellence Gala on April 1st at the New York City Hilton Midtown to two engineering students currently pursuing engineering at a New York accredited college. The accomplishments of the honorees will also be recognized at this event, the proceeds from which support the scholarship program. Congressman John Katko (NY 24th District) and congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (NY 18th District) are scheduled to act as emcees.
The Building Congress will be honored for being an integral part of the success of the design and construction industry throughout New York, including promotion and advocacy for investment, an appropriate regulatory environment, and the industry in general. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (New York District) will be honored for their long-term commitment to resiliency in the New York Metropolitan region, which will be a significant contributor to the area’s long term viability. This includes work already done since Hurricane Sandy, as well as projects currently under way that will provide the area with the ability to respond and recover from future weather events more quickly.
Also to be honored at the Gala are the recipients of all past Awards of Merit, including the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York; Metropolitan Transportation Authority; New York City Department of Design and Construction; New York City Department of Environmental Protection; New York City Department of Transportation; NYS Department of Transportation; NYS Environmental Facilities Corporation; NYS Thruway Authority; and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. An additional $5,000 scholarship will be given during the Gala in the name of all past Award of Merit honorees.
“It is essential to recognize those organizations that make a significant impact on the built environment,” said Jay Simson, ACEC New York president. “The dedication of the Building Congress and the U.S. Army Corps complements our efforts to foster resilient infrastructure and safe communities in NYS.”
Including the two Award of Merit scholarships, the ACEC New York Scholarship Fund will present $67,500 in scholarships to engineering college students throughout NYS in 2017, as well as a $3,000 scholarship through the ACE Mentor Program, which recognizes and assists current New York high school students pursuing engineering careers.
