Developing Long Island: South <br>Shore University Hospital Expansion

Garden City, NY Northwell Health’s South Shore University Hospital Expansion is a six-story, out-of-ground expansion of Northwell Health’s eastern region flagship hospital. The first phase of the project includes core and shell construction, foundations, steel superstructure, façade, back of house spaces, vertical transportation, fire protection, main mechanical, electrical, plumbing equipment and distribution.

The expansion will ultimately feature a lobby garden in the pavilion, 10 operating rooms, three procedure rooms, 33 pre- and post-op bays, 90 acuity adaptable patient beds, and a sky bridge connecting the building to the existing hospital.

On October 1, 2024, after 3,000 pieces of steel had been installed, the final steel beam was ceremoniously placed atop the pavilion to mark a major milestone in the project’s completion. In December, construction on the façade program began, which included the scaffolding and sheathing for the masonry brick and infrastructure risers to the roof. In January, the team completed foundations, steel, concrete on deck, and fireproofing the last roof level. 

The project has overcome challenges including ensuring no day-to-day interruptions while building on an active campus and contending with rainy and windy weather that makes it difficult or impossible for some trade partners to complete their tasks. Recent progress includes rigging air handlers starting in January and beginning the curtain wall in early February. Next summer, two 20,000-gallon underground fuel oil tanks will be installed and feed the hospital.
