IREM NYC Summer of Service Program volunteers with Friends in Need

Manhattan, NY On July 17th, members of IREM NYC participated in the IREM’s Summer of Service Program by volunteering with Friends in Need, a nonprofit dedicated to distributing food to those who are food insecure. The chapter and Stephanie Caulfield CPM, ARM Michael Torres, CPM, Tina Thiakodemitris, CPM and IREM executive director Donna Scholes donated food to over 160 people in Tompkins Square Park in NYC.

Friends in Need Foundation is an non-profit charitable organization with a purpose of helping the less fortunate by providing food, clothing, living necessities as well as working with other organizations dedicated to minimizing hunger and hardship. Their feeding programs were initiated in NYC in 2002. Since then they’ve established and maintain regular programs in NYC, Newark, NJ, Philadelphia and Pensacola FLA. The organization, run by volunteers, continues to grow with their dedicated volunteers and donations.

IREM NYC will be helping out at Green City Force’s Forest Houses Eco-Hub, an urban farm in the Bronx on September 14th. Green City Force trains young leaders to power a green and inclusive economy, through service. Their model corps in New York City enlists and trains young people from low income housing communities for a new and more equitable economy. They equip them with the tools to change the trajectory of their lives and access good jobs. Corps members develop a passion for sustainability and service through driving large-scale environmental and health initiatives in public housing and other frontline communities. They design service as a path to greater well-being and means to enlist young people to become contributors and leaders in the movement to build a greener, fairer and more just world. Graduates go on to jobs or college, directly or through alumni initiatives that build towards sectoral jobs and apprenticeships, via social enterprise contracts or advanced training developed with employers. Their network of alumni, partners and supporters constitutes a growing ecosystem anchored in their corps.

On September 29th IREM NYC will be running and walking in Towers to Tunnels’ 5K. Since 9/11, Towers to Tunnels has been helping America’s heroes by providing mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children and by building specially-adapted smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders. They are also committed to eradicating veteran homelessness and helping America to Never Forget September 11, 2001.
