Manhattan, NY EP Engineering, has completed the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) design services for Air Mail, a newly opened newsstand and café located at 546 Hudson St. in the West Village. Situated within a 1905 rowhouse, the 1,200 s/f space presented challenges in integrating modern building systems within a compact, historically sensitive environment.
Collaborating with BWArchitects, EP Engineering focused on delivering energy-efficient solutions with minimal visual impact to preserve the building's historic character. The team designed and coordinated a Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) HVAC system to provide zoned, quiet heating and cooling throughout the retail and café areas, eliminating the need for ductwork and maintaining the integrity of existing architectural elements.
The electrical system was engineered to support custom lighting, point-of-sale equipment, and specialty displays, while the plumbing systems were tailored for both retail use and the café’s back-of-house coffee service area.
