West Nyack, NY BRIDGES, a nonprofit organization advocating for people with disabilities, held the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Sensory Room on April 4, 2025. The event took place on the 4th floor of the Palisades Center, next to Target, marking an exciting milestone in inclusive community resources for children with sensory processing needs.
The BRIDGES Sensory Room is a space designed to support individuals with sensory sensitivities, including those with autism, ADHD, anxiety, and other intellectual or developmental disabilities. This specialized environment offers interactive sensory activities aimed at fostering well-being, self-regulation, and relaxation in a safe and supportive setting.
The Sensory Room is open to children up to the age of 18, including young toddlers and babies, with a parent, guardian, or caregiver required to accompany all users. The goal is to create a peaceful and welcoming space for children who need sensory support while providing families and caregivers with a vital community resource.
BRIDGES extends their gratitude to the sponsors and community partners who have made this project possible: New York Empire State Development, Hellman Management, M&T Bank, New York State Commission for the Blind, Veolia, Lia Toyota, and Jawonio.
“We are thrilled to open this state-of-the-art Sensory Room and provide a dedicated space for children to explore, relax, and engage in sensory-friendly activities,” said Carlos Martinez, executive director of BRIDGES. “This project reflects our ongoing commitment to inclusion and accessibility, ensuring that children with sensory needs and their families have the resources they deserve.”
“This is an exciting day for BRIDGES As a sponsor and board member, I am thrilled to see this great asset to help serve those in our community.” Howard Hellman, first vice-president of the BRIDGES board of directors and corporate sponsor of the Sensory Room.
“BRIDGES has long been committed to promoting equal rights and inclusivity among people of all abilities in our Rockland community,” said county executive Ed Day. “This new Sensory Room at Palisades Center is another step towards improving accessibility for individuals who need sensory support to ensure they feel welcome and secure in a more relaxing environment. Thank you for this new addition for individuals to enjoy.”
Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann said, “I am delighted to congratulate BRIDGES for the opening of this wonderful Sensory Room. This space will provide children with a place to explore, learn, and thrive in an environment designed just for them. BRIDGES’ continued dedication to inclusivity and support for families is inspiring, and we are grateful for the positive impact you continue to make in our community.”
