What is one project or achievement in your career that you are most proud of, and how did it impact your organization or community?
One morning on my way to work in New York, a man called my name. I didn’t recognize Enrique at first — he had been a friend of an employee at a firm where I was a principal over 20 years ago. He spoke little English and struggled to find work as an architect, but I gave him a chance. On this busy sidewalk, he thanked me for the opportunity that helped him build his career. As he shared his journey to becoming a construction manager, his family, and his children, I realized the profound, life-changing impact of mentorship in shaping careers.
Who or what has inspired you most in your career, and what advice would you share with the next generation of women entering the A/E/C industry?
My father built a 600-person firm based on integrity and hard work while prioritizing family. He recognized that both men and women needed work-life balance and structured his firm to support that. His leadership, compassion, and respect for his employees shaped my approach to leadership. His simple advice — “Move forward” and “What’s next?” — has stayed with me, reminding me to persevere through challenges without looking back. To the next generation of women in the A/E/C industry: be fearless. Recognize that your perspective and experiences bring unique value to the profession.
